Isabell Weiser, General Manager Germany at Whatnot, analyzes the evolution of live commerce in a January 2024 report for Ecommerce Germany. The data highlights a shift from price-driven shopping toward community-based experiences where seller personality drives conversion.
Fashion Outpaces Collectibles
Live commerce is moving beyond high-octane trading of collectibles like Pokémon cards. While Whatnot launched in 2019 to solve marketplace liquidity in niche sectors, the platform now hosts over 200 categories. Weiser identifies fashion as the largest segment. This category encompasses luxury resale, vintage items, surplus stock, and boutique brands.
"Collectible fashion" items, such as limited-edition sneakers and high-end handbags, bridged this transition. This shift demonstrates that the live shopping model now serves as a mainstream channel for lifestyle and apparel brands rather than just hobbyists.
Personality Drives Conversion
Digital consumer motivations are changing. Traditional e-commerce models drive conversion through price or product availability. However, Weiser identifies seller personality as the primary driver for audience retention and sales in live environments.
Seller personality is the number one reason people come, ahead of price and product selection.
