Tradedoubler hosted the webinar Black Friday After the Checkout on October 24, 2024, featuring Scully Chen (ABOUT YOU), Karl Wood (Atolls), Daniel Kocher (MAI xpose360), and representatives from Klarna. The panel established that long-term profitability requires brands to plan the second purchase before the first transaction occurs.
CLV Potential of Peak Shoppers
Performance marketers often incorrectly assume that discount-driven Q4 shoppers lack loyalty. Data from fashion retailer ABOUT YOU suggests otherwise. Scully Chen, Marketing Manager at ABOUT YOU, notes that customers acquired during Black Friday and Q4 demonstrate a higher Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) than those acquired during seasonal summer or winter sales.
Advertisers must define valuable outcomes beyond the initial sale to capitalize on this trend. These metrics include a second purchase within a 90-day window or the reactivation of a lapsed customer. By setting these goals early, brands align their affiliate commissions and partner incentives with long-term growth.
Customers acquired during Black Friday and Q4 bring the business greater lifetime value than those acquired during summer or winter sales.
Post-Purchase Journey Mapping
Effective retention requires a clear understanding of the product lifecycle. Karl Wood, UK Head of Business Development at Atolls, stated that post-checkout strategies must be intuitive. For example, a consumer buying a coffee machine is a candidate for coffee pod subscriptions or accessories.
Timing remains critical. Daniel Kocher, Teamlead Affiliate Marketing at MAI xpose360, identified the first 48 to 72 hours after a purchase as the vital window for personalized follow-up. While fashion retailers like ABOUT YOU may use a longer window for re-engagement, the brand conversation must continue immediately after the "thank you" page.
